ANTONIN ARTAUD
French poet, theatrical theorist, director, actor, essayist and draftsman. He was born on September 4, 1896 in Marseille and died on March 4, 1948 in Ivry-sur-Seine. His Christian name is Antoine Marie Joseph Paul Artaud. From childhood to adulthood, due to serious health problems (meningitis and hereditary syphilis), he was treated with controlled medications and various therapies, including electroshock. Artaud's work, anarchic and influenced by French surrealism, explores the limits of language and aims to overcome the split between nature and culture that characterizes the decline of the West. Artaud's thought influences philosophy and artistic languages in general, with emphasis on poetry, theater, dance, performance and visual arts. In the field of performing arts, Artaud is known mainly for his conception of the theater of cruelty, and for the concept of the body without organs. Artaud advocates a sensorial theater of metaphysical inspiration that seeks the reconciliation of the human being with the cosmos and the deinstitutionalization and de-standardization of the body. Among the most widespread works by Artaud are The Theatre and its Double, Voyage to the Land of the Tarahumara, Van Gogh, The Man Suicided by Society, and To Have Done With the Judgment of God.
